The project aimed at fostering awareness, observational skills, and early civic responsibility among young learners. Through a structured series of discussions, hands-on activities, mapping exercises, creative artwork, model construction, role-play sessions, and reflection-based tasks, students examined the functioning of different neighbourhood services and their significance in daily life. This integrated pedagogical approach encouraged curiosity, gratitude, and responsible behaviour while enabling meaningful connections between conceptual learning and real-world contexts.
A significant component of the project was the Educational Visit to three prominent neighbourhood locations—the Gurudwara, the Bank, and the Fire Station
At the Gurudwara, students experienced the calm and welcoming atmosphere of the space and observed important values such as respect, discipline, and seva. Seeing everyone sit together as equals helped them understand the spirit of unity, equality, and togetherness.
At the Bank, children watched how money is deposited, withdrawn, and recorded. They were curious to see passbooks being updated and ATM machines in action—giving them a simple yet meaningful understanding of how banks keep money safe and how financial services support the community.
The Fire Station visit was the most thrilling for the students. They explored fire engines, ladders, water hoses, and the protective gear firefighters wear. Officers patiently explained how they respond to emergencies, and a short rescue demonstration left the children both amazed and inspired. These real-life experiences significantly enhanced the depth and authenticity of their learning.
The project culminated in a well-organised PBL Showcase, held on 16 October, during which students confidently presented the theme “Our Neighbourhood.” The showcase included a structured Neighbourhood Tour, detailed explanations of Community Helpers and the vehicles they operate, and a display of project files containing factual information, illustrations, and reflective entries. The clarity, poise, collaborative spirit, and presentation skills demonstrated by the students underscored the effectiveness of experiential, learner-centered pedagogy practiced at DPS Surajkund.
The Annual Project ‘Our Neighbourhood’ played a pivotal role in strengthening students’ conceptual understanding, enhancing essential skills, and fostering a sense of appreciation and responsibility towards their community. The initiative contributed meaningfully to shaping well-informed, empathetic, and socially responsible young learners.
