At DPS Surajkund, we uphold our ethos of nurturing responsible, reflective, and value-driven learners through meaningful, experiential learning. This year, our Dussehra celebration was thoughtfully designed to help children understand the true essence of the festival — the victory of good over evil and the importance of overcoming negative habits.
To bring this message alive, the school organized two engaging activities: a Ravana Dahan Reflection Activity and a Puppet Show based on the Ramayana. Children, along with their parents and grandparents, were invited to be part of this enriching experience.
During the Ravana Dahan Activity, students from Montessori to Grade II expressed their willingness to let go of habits they wished to change.
· Montessori learners whispered their bad habits to their teachers, building confidence as they acknowledged them gently.
· BV II and BV III students drew illustrations of habits they wished to overcome.
· Grade I and II learners wrote down unhelpful behaviours such as not listening, throwing tantrums, or not sharing.
The Puppet Show beautifully portrayed key episodes from the Ramayana, helping children understand that Ravana himself was not a bad person — it was his habits that led him astray. This reinforced the core message for our young Dipsites: it is never the person who is bad, but the habits that shape one’s character.
As the symbolic Ravana effigy burned, children were reminded that just as the ten heads represented different evils, they too could let go of their negative habits and embrace positivity with determination.
The celebration was a heart-warming blend of storytelling, reflection, and cultural learning. It left everyone — children, parents, and grandparents — with smiles, valuable life lessons, and a deeper connection to our rich heritage.
